Couldn't load pickup availability
The K&N KN-170C is a premium Chrome spin-on oil filter specifically designed for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It is the chrome equivalent to the black KN-170B.
While it looks very similar to the KN-171C we discussed earlier, the KN-170 series is a shorter "compact" filter, typically used on older Harley models or where clearance is extremely tight.
Key Specifications
-

-

-
Bypass Valve: Yes.
Primary Fitment: The "Evolution" & "Early Twin Cam" Specialist
The KN-170C is the go-to for riders who need a shorter filter body to clear frame rails or exhaust pipes. It primarily fits:
-
Harley-Davidson Evolution (Evo) Engines: Late 80s and 90s Softails and Sportsters.
-
Early Twin Cam 88 Engines: Many 1999–2006 models.
-
Sportster Models: (1984–2022) - Many riders prefer the shorter 170 over the 171 for a "tucked in" look.
-
Custom Builds: Ideal for "Chopper" frames where the oil filter mount is positioned close to the front down-tubes.
KN-170C vs. KN-171C: Which one do you need?
| Feature | KN-170C (Short) | KN-171C (Standard) |
| Height | ~3.0 inches | ~3.7 inches |
| Filtration Surface | Slightly less | Slightly more |
| Clearance | Best for tight spots | Standard fit |
| Interchangeable? | Often yes (threads match) | Often yes (threads match) |
Tech Note: Because the KN-170C has a smaller internal volume, it holds slightly less oil. If your bike can physically fit the taller KN-171C, many mechanics recommend it for the extra filtration surface area. However, if your exhaust is in the way, the KN-170C is your best friend.
Why the Chrome Finish?
The "C" designation means this filter is meant to be seen. On most Harleys, the oil filter is front-and-center. The KN-171C provides:
-
Corrosion Resistance: The chrome plating helps protect the canister from road salt and moisture.
-
Easy Cleaning: Road grime wipes off chrome more easily than matte black paint.
-
The Nut: Having a 17mm nut on a chrome filter is a lifesaver; you won't ruin the finish with a "claw" or "strap" style wrench.
