The K&N KN-171C is the premium Chrome version of the filter we just discussed. Mechanically, it is identical to the KN-171B, but it features a high-luster finish designed to match the chrome aesthetics of Harley-Davidson and custom cruiser engines.

Key Specifications

  • Finish: Chrome (Mirror-like finish for high-visibility placement).

  • Media Type: High-flow synthetic blend (traps 99% of contaminants).

  • Anti-Drainback Valve: Yes (Nitrile rubber).

  • PSI Relief Valve: Integrated to prevent oil starvation in cold starts or high-pressure situations.

  • 17mm Nut: Chrome-plated, pre-drilled for safety wire—perfect for easy removal without scratching the finish with a strap wrench.

Fitment Guide

This is the standard high-performance chrome filter for the vast majority of Harley-Davidson motorcycles from the late 1980s through the current Milwaukee-Eight (M8) models.

  • Touring: Street Glide, Road Glide, Road King, Ultra Classic.

  • Softail: Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Slim, Breakout.

  • Dyna: Street Bob, Low Rider, Wide Glide.

  • Sportster: Iron 883, Forty-Eight, 1200 Custom.

  • Buell: Most air-cooled models (S1, M2, X1).

Comparison: 171B vs. 171C

Feature KN-171B KN-171C
Color Matte/Gloss Black Triple-Plate Chrome
Visibility Stealth/Engine-matching Show-bike / Custom accent
Performance Identical Identical
Ease of Cleaning Hides road grime better Requires wiping to maintain shine

Installation Tip

When installing the KN-171C, since it is chrome, avoid using a standard metal wrench or socket directly on the nut if you want to keep it pristine. Use a six-point socket or place a thin piece of plastic/cloth between the wrench and the nut to prevent marring the chrome finish.

Pro Tip: Always pre-fill the filter with a little fresh oil before spinning it on. On a large V-Twin, this reduces the "dry" time before oil pressure registers on your gauge.
